Comprehensive Care, Closer to You

Residents queue for blood-pressure checks under a canopy beside the SS Care Trust Health-on-Wheels mobile clinic van.

Many people in Davangere's villages and urban wards never get checked for diabetes or high blood pressure, simply because the nearest facility is too far, too expensive or too unfamiliar. Health-on-Wheels removes that barrier by taking the clinic to them. A mobile health camp sets up for a day in a village or ward and offers free screening and consultation.

The Trust has run mobile health camps since its early years, and in October 2023 it launched a dedicated Mobile Health Clinic bus to run camps across the rural and urban wards of Davangere. Each camp screens for non-communicable diseases, counsels those at risk and refers people who need treatment to the affiliate hospitals.

The effect goes beyond the day of the camp. Regular visits build a habit of seeking care early, which is the only way to reduce the long-term burden of diabetes and hypertension. By 2026 the program had held more than 200 camps and completed over 50,000 screenings.

How it works

  1. Plan with the communityA village panchayat, ward or institution requests a camp; the team fixes a date and spreads the word through ASHAs, anganwadis and volunteers.
  2. Camp dayThe bus arrives with doctors and equipment; residents are screened for blood pressure, blood sugar and other risk factors and receive a consultation on the spot.
  3. Refer and follow upPeople needing further care are referred to Bapuji Hospital, SSIMS or JJM Medical College, and the community health volunteers follow up locally.
